Dennis Ziegenhorn and Ollie Amick will share the same Missouri House district under a plan agreed to by two members of the House Redistricting Commission from the 8th Congressional District; John Lichtenegger of Jackson, the Republican member of the commission, and Mel Weems of Bonne Terre, Missouri, the Democratic member, have been working together to finalize a map in this part of the state based on 1990 census figures.

Mary M. Hosea, a teacher and principal in the Delta school system for more than 40 years, has been named a "Pioneer in Education" by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

1966

A heavy downpour in the morning marks the ninth day in 10 that rainfall has been recorded either at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport or by Lee L. Albert, Cape Girardeau weather observer.

Walker Childs, president of Childs Food Inc., announces a number of promotions in the IGA units in Cape Girardeau; Gene Swob is named general manager and coordinator of IGA Foodliner and Mr. C's IGA Foodliner; Richard Pipler is promoted to manager of Mr. C's, and Clarence Break will be co-manager; Terry Hunze is named head of the meat department at IGA Foodliner, with Ted Rubel the assistant manager; and Bob Osborn is promoted to head the meat department at Mr. C's, and the assistant will be John Volkerding.

1941

A heavy rain came to Cape Girardeau and district overnight, eliminating what was left of a drought that had gripped the area nearly the entire summer; the rainfall totaled 1.8 inches, the heaviest of the year.

It is learned May Greene, who served the public schools of Cape Girardeau for 53 years, will be presented with a distinguished service award by the Missouri State Teachers Association at its annual meeting Dec. 4 in St. Louis; such recognition to school teachers in the state is limited to five each year.

1916

The ladies of the Civic Improvement Association are making plans for a public swimming pool on Cape Girardeau's south side; Mayor Fred Kage has given his permission to build the pool at the corner of Lorimier and William streets, the lot belonging to the city.

The last baboon of the herd that escaped from the carnival that was showing during the Jackson Homecomers has been reunited with his family; the capture was made Thursday morning by men from the Wonderland show on the Daugherty farm north of Jackson.
