Laurel Adkisson has been named marketing coordinator of the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau; she will assume her new duties May 7.
A representative of a company that is filming a movie called "Boy Scouts" will look at Trail of Tears State Park near here and Camp Lewallen near Piedmont, Missouri, for film footage to use in the movie; in addition, Walt Disney Studios has requested two videos of scenes of the Cape Girardeau area.
The Committee for Council Manager Government files petitions with the city council requesting an election be held to determine if that form of municipal administration should be adopted here; James McHaney, attorney for the committee, tells the council there are more than 2,300 names on the petitions.
The Jackson City Council authorizes a preliminary survey for a new swimming pool for Jackson; the survey will be done by Russell & Axon, consulting engineers of St. Louis, which is presently working on city plans for expanding water and sewer facilities; Jackson's present municipal swimming pool is 27 years old.
At a meeting of the fair board, city officials and other interested residents last night, it was decided the Cape Fair, to operate as a Southeast Missouri institution, will be held at the new city park Sept. 24 to 29, inclusive; it also was decided to contact George Gray of DuQuoin, Illinois, and endeavor to secure his services in managing the fair this year; he has been managing the successful Caruthersville, Missouri, fair for the last six years.
A long-term lease has been taken on a business building at 420 Broadway by Edward J. Rosecan, widely known theater operator of Hannibal, Missouri, who will remodel the building for use as a theater, to be known as the Rialto; Victor Klarsfeld, an associate of Rosecan with many years of experience in the motion picture business, will manage the new theater.
Granberry Jackson, a civil engineer, arrives in Cape Girardeau at noon from St. Louis; he'll meet with the judiciary committee of the city council regarding plans for a new sewer district in the west end of town; Jackson was here 10 years ago, when he devised the plans and specifications for the present sewer system.
The finishing touches are being put on the new I. Ben Miller drugstore and ice cream parlor; the entire building has been rebuilt, and the new work makes it look very attractive.
