Westbound traffic lanes at William Street and Kingshighway will close today or tomorrow, depending on the weather; work at that intersection will include the installation of larger culverts under William on Walker Creek, part of a flood-control project.

The Jackson Board of Aldermen yesterday authorized the purchase of 38 acres of park land, east of the Brookside Motel on U.S. 61 in north Jackson; the property is owned by the motel's owner, the Gwen Winningham Trust.

Plans for the construction of Route K at Cape Girardeau and for the major improvement to Route V north of the city are virtually complete; the Route K construction will represent an extension of William Street and will replace the present Route K, which is Gordonville Road; the Route V project involves widening and some relocation to improve alignment to Egypt Mills.

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- The mystery of who dumped the six tons of insecticide containing arsenic found near here has been solved; a farmer from near Matthews, Missouri, notified county authorities that he had left the poison at the disposal site.

1940

The Cape Fair will be resumed the coming fall, it was decreed by a meeting of various groups at the courthouse last night; after much discussion, the conference decided to hold a meeting of the Fair Board on Thursday evening to reorganize, the main object being to find a way of securing the service of a man experienced in the fair business who will give his entire time to getting the Cape Fair restarted.

Showers fall at intervals following a near cloudburst at 1 a.m., flooding Cape Girardeau's streets and nearby streams; the storm, a combination of rain, hail and lightning, is fairly well localized in the east end of Cape Girardeau County.

1915

The Cape Girardeau community is assured of no more deaths from electric shock, drowning, asphyxiation, pneumonia or choking; one of the latest devices, a Lungmotor, has been purchased by the water and light company for its use in Cape Girardeau in emergencies.

Alvin F. Lindsay, the Sikeston, Missouri, architect, will leave Sunday for New York City, to be gone about three months; his trip results from a commission to build a bungalow at Manhattan Beach for W.H. Tanner of Sikeston, who is establishing a summer home at the famous resort on Long Island.
