The Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority announces the signing of Girardeau Stevedores and Contractors Inc. as operator of the public dock facility; the $2.3 million dock for loading and unloading materials and products was completed last fall.
The administration of the Cape Girardeau Senior Center is seeking funds for the construction of a new building to house the nutrition center; the center currently rents the civic center, 232 Broadway, and shares the facility with local organizations geared toward teen-related activities.
Good Friday. A community worship service sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance is held at noon at the First General Baptist Church, 200 Broadway; seven local spiritual leaders each give 25-minute sermons on one of "The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross."
Plans for the major improvement and relocation of North Sprigg Street have been completed, and right of way acquisition is in negotiation; the relocated street will intersect with Bertling Street at the property line of a site owned by the school system as a prospective location for an elementary school.
Although the state and federal governments are carrying the bulk of the relief load, the Cape Girardeau city administration in the last two years had to dig deep into its own treasury to help needy families of the community; so heavy has been the indigent poor spending by the city that bills up for approval at the last meeting of the old city council amounted to $840.55 for relief purposes.
When Salvation Army Gen. Evangeline Booth visits Cape Girardeau on May 14, she will speak at the new Arena Building; the event will be the first big meeting to be staged at the still-unfinished Arena.
That the economy might be picking up a bit seems evident from the fact that the Portland Cement plant started work again yesterday, after having been idle since the day before Christmas; Edward Hely's rock-crushing plant started work three days previously in order to give the cement plant material to work on when it started.
H.E. Alexander says he has practically completed site work for the construction of a garage building on the property opposite the Park Theater in the 200 block of Broadway; the building will be leased to Barrett Cotner as a garage and supply house.
