1993

Easter Sunday. Several local churches conduct sunrise services for the holiday; they include First Christian, Lynwood Baptist, Good Shepherd Lutheran, St. Andrew Lutheran, Westminster Presbyterian, Hobbs Chapel United Methodist and Evangelical United Church of Christ; the 57th annual Easter sunrise service is held at 6:30 a.m. at Bald Knob Cross of Peace near Alto Pass, Illinois.

The Rev. Ron Green conducts his first Sunday service as pastor of Faith Baptist Temple in Cape Girardeau; prior to becoming pastor here, Green and his wife, Rene, were on staff at First Baptist Church in Ashton, Pennsylvania.

1968

Plans are in the making at State College for development of a married students mobile housing complex north of the school campus; the college is interviewing married students in an attempt to determine interest in such a program; the complex would probably be located in a secluded area on the north end of the State College farm, near Sprigg and Bertling streets.

O.T. Dalton of Charleston, Missouri, commanding officer of the 135th Engineer Group (Combat) headquartered at Cape Girardeau, this week received his promotion to colonel, retroactive to Jan. 26.

1943

The Rev. Marshall Eisenhauer, pastor of rural churches in Perry County, Missouri, has been named pastor of Third Street Methodist Church here; Eisenhauer has pastored the York and Eureka churches the past two years.

KELSO, Mo. -- Kelso residents, in the first rally in Scott County for the Second War Loan drive, purchase $13,325 in war bonds and stamps; in a short time, a crowd of nearly 200, assembling at the Catholic parish hall, oversubscribes the community's $10,000 quota; talks at the rally are delivered by Stephen Barton of Benton, Missouri, county chairman, and the Rev. Joseph Keusenkothen, pastor of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

1918

A grand meeting of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club and friends is held in the evening at the Elks Club; guests for the occasion arrived on various trains throughout the day to take part in the meeting and the feast prepared by the women of the Civic Improvement Association; federal Judge D.P. Dyer breaks his rule against attending evening meetings and is persuaded to give a patriotic speech.

Mrs. William Bryan leaves for her home in Chicago, after spending several days in Cape Girardeau getting the home of her mother, Mrs. J.A. Hawkins, in readiness for her arrival here; Hawkins has been seriously ill in Little Rock, Arkansas, for several weeks; her husband has been transferred here as freight agent for the Frisco Railroad.
