Cape Girardeau officials say they aren't surprised that Clark Street paving project won't be completed on schedule in view of all problems which have been experienced on job; Nip Kelly Trucking and Equipment Co. has nine construction days left under contract, and only 60 percent of work has been completed.

50 years ago: Sept. 8, 1954

Tents begin to bloom in sunshine like mushrooms after spring shower; canvas will provide homes away from home for animals to be exhibited at SEMO District Fair, which starts week's engagement Monday at Arena Park; while workers erect tents and build fences and ticket booths, another crew is making track ready for harness racing.

As of noon, 860 students had enrolled at State College, increase of 155 over corresponding time last year; college authorities believe that figure probably represents about two-thirds total enrollment expected.

75 years ago: Sept. 8, 1929

Nine Cape Girardeau churches inaugurate "Back to Church Crusade," with plans to carry it through autumn in effort to build up greater church interest and attendance; churches taking part in campaign are Centenary Methodist, First Christian, Christ Episcopal, Christ Evangelical, First Baptist, Grace Methodist, Maple Avenue Methodist, Third Street Methodist and First Presbyterian.

President Joseph A. Serena of Teachers College, accompanied by his wife, arrived by automobile at their home last night after completing 12,000-mile trip, including tour of nine countries of Europe.
