50 years ago: Sept. 7, 1961

A weather forecast for possible scattered showers is welcome news to the SEMO District Fair Board; general rain now through Sunday followed by clear skies is all that is needed to make next week's fair a success, judging by the number of entries that have already exceeded those of last year in several categories.

The former residence of Professor and Mrs. B.F. Johnson at 530 N. Pacific St., purchased by State College, has been turned into a residence for women students and named Johnson Hall.

75 years ago: Sept. 7, 1936

After victories for three consecutive years, the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps of Cape Girardeau lost its attempt to make it four in a row when they were disqualified during last night's competition at the state legion convention at Springfield, Mo.; the corps went over the finish line during a maneuver, which disqualified it; winning the competition was the corps from Joplin, Mo.

Harry Seidler, 28, of Chester, Ill., was thrown into the river near the traffic bridge during yesterday's motorboat races here; Seidler, who cannot swim, was rescued by a St. Louis boat pilot, who dove into the water after him.

100 years ago: Sept. 7, 1911

Someone broke into Dr. M.A. Grissom's dental office on Broadway last night and purloined about $50 worth of sample dentures; they displayed considerable gold in their crevices.

The Commercial Club decides its two large windows facing on Themis Street will be used to display articles made in Cape Girardeau and the vicinity; manufacturers will be asked to contribute small sample articles of the things they produce.
