St. Mark Lutheran Church holds its Family Fellowship Day, with festivities beginning in the morning at Sunday school.
Last fall, the Cape Girardeau City Council solicited bids for a disaster-warning siren system, awarded a contract and set April 15 of this year as the completion deadline; this fall, following the failure of the first system, the city will again seek bids for sirens and will likely set April 15 of next year as the new completion deadline.
A suggestion that the city call another election for issuance of swimming pool bonds to coincide with the statewide election Oct. 4 has been referred to the Chamber of Commerce and a citizens' pool committee by the city council, but the time is short in which the requirements must be met; an election Aug. 16 showed a substantial majority in favor of the new pool, but the issue failed by a mere 68 votes of having the required two-thirds majority.
Even the 1,600-student forecast for registration at State College seems inadequate as a flood of students in the first two of three alphabetical listings pour into Academic Hall to enroll in fall classes; by noon, 1,156 student had registered, roughly two-thirds of the students expected to enroll.
About 125 members of the St. Louis Council of Knights of Columbus arrive early in the morning aboard the steamer Cape Girardeau and are guests of the St. Vincent's Council; following Mass at St. Vincent's, the visitors tour the city in automobiles.
Edward Marty, new instruction in Trinity Lutheran School, is installed during the morning worship service at Trinity Lutheran Church; Marty came to Cape Girardeau from St. Louis and previously taught at Perryville, Mo.
The establishment of the city sewer system received a strong impetus last night at a Cape Girardeau City Council meeting; the ordinance providing for the construction of the system in the first district, the boundaries of which enclose the greater part of the city, received its third and final reading and was adopted by a unanimous vote of the council.
Bob Lee Caldwell of Fruitland, like a great many others who appreciate the school advantages available in Cape Girardeau, has moved to this town; he will reside in the Painter Addition while his son attends the Normal School.
