A longtime member of the Southeast Missouri State University faculty and a woman whose family connection with the university extended over 60 years, Lilly Brucher Gehrs, dies at Cape La-Croix Manor; Gehrs, 91, was a member of the university home economic faculty since 1939.

Public hearings will be held next week in Delta and Chaffee, Mo., to gather citizen opinion on the proposed merger of the school systems in the two communities.

50 years ago: Sept. 6, 1957

The first week of classes for most Cape Girardeau children concludes, and a tally by The Missourian of enrollment shows 4,789 pupils -- a few more will be added next week -- were in attendance at 13 public and parochial schools in the city.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Perry County Fair opens in the afternoon with a street parade, leading to the city park, where the fair will run until late Saturday night.

75 years ago: Sept. 6, 1932

Candidates for positions on the 1932 Jackson High School gridiron team took on a more footballish appearance yesterday, as the new mentor, Wilbur Stalcup, issued equipment to 25 athletes; returning lettermen are Joe L. Meyer, Don Vogel, Jimmy Obermiller, Hubert Seabaugh, Paul Niblack, Wilson Estel, Garth Warren, Robert Gilder, Clarence Bennett and Norman Gockel.

Louis B. Arnoldi, son of Dr. and Mrs. H.A. Arnoldi of Cape Girardeau, is back from Camp Henry in Des Moines, Iowa, with the distinction of being the "best cadet" among the more than 900 youths enrolled in the various courses of the Citizens Military Training Camp.

100 years ago: Sept. 6, 1907

Cape Girardeau's Chautauqua begins in the evening; the program consists of a band concert at 7 p.m., followed by the opening address by evangelist Lincoln McConnell, vocal solos by Loren G. Jones and Blanche Cohen, a reading by Margaret Bates, impersonations by Gilbert Eldredge, and moving pictures.

Henry Vanover of Vanduser, Mo., is in town selling sweet potatoes; Vanover says he has a crop of 5,000 bushels.
