The new director of the Wesley Foundation and campus minister at Southeast Missouri State University is the Rev. Barbara J. Phifer; in addition, Phifer also is serving as pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church on Jackson Route 4.

Cape Girardeau businessman Martin Hecht and Mrs. Hecht will be among those attending the official state dinner at the White House Wednesday evening for Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Bagin.

50 years ago: Sept. 6, 1956

For the first time in its history, horses and mules will be missing from the SEMO District Fair when it begins its second 100 years next week; horses and mules were removed from the entry list this year because their numbers have tapered off with each succeeding fair.

Cape Girardeau's new garbage and trash collection service, Dee's Disposal Co., 108 S. Sprigg St., operated by Mrs. Doretta Golliher under a contract agreement with the city, expects to place three new packer-type trucks in operation next week, replacing the temporary vehicles now in operation.

75 years ago: Sept. 6, 1931

Members of Red Start Baptist Church have canned 35 quarts of peaches, which will be given to the Southeast Missouri Hospital.

The Rev. W.G. Winans, Baptist evangelist, closes out a three-week revival meeting at the Emmanuel Baptist Church; he has been prevailed upon to remain in Cape Girardeau one more day and deliver a sermon on communism Monday evening at the Courthouse Park.

100 years ago: Sept. 6, 1906

Word has come from Jackson that C.W. Medley, Democrat nominee for county recorder, has notified the party chairman that he is unable to stay on the ticket; Medley has accepted a position with the Jackson Military Academy as a teacher of military science and coach of the football team, which will require all his attention.

Edward F. Regenhardt has prepared a block of marble from his Cape Girardeau quarry that will be sent to J. Knox Taylor, supervising architect of the treasury and who will make the plans for the federal building which will be built in Cape Girardeau; it is hoped the government can be persuaded to use local marble in the construction of this building.
