A former Scott City resident, Monica Heuring, is appearing as Faye in Neil Simon's "Chapter Two" at the Sierra Madre Playhouse near Los Angeles; Heuring received her B.S. degree from Southeast Missouri State University, majoring in speech and theater.

About 40 acres of Ron Schlosser's farm near Benton, Mo., are planted in Jerusalem artichokes; the crop, a project of Schlosser, Tom Ross and his sons, Tim and Steve, was put out for the first time this year.

50 years ago: Sept. 5, 1958

Rocketing school enrollment finds an apt illustration in Cape Girardeau schools when, the first week of classes completed in 12 buildings, the number shoots up to 5,095 with three schools still to be added to the figure; a comparison with the total for the end of the first week of school in 1957 shows there are 306 more children in classes.

An entry office for the SEMO District Fair will open on the north side of the lobby of the Arena Building on Sunday; the fair opens its 1958 showing Tuesday.

75 years ago: Sept. 5, 1933

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Musicians' Post of St. Louis wins the annual band contest at the state convention here of the Missouri Department of the American Legion, while the drum and bugle corps championship is awarded the Cape Girardeau post; after five tries, this is the first time the latter has won first place.

Workers are tearing away a portion of the side walls of the concrete ramp on the exterior of the Rueseler Motor Co. building, 221 N. Fountain St., preparatory to widening a part of it and eliminating a sharp curve.

100 years ago: Sept. 5, 1908

William Tisdale, a highly respected man who lived four miles west of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday and was buried yesterday at the old Hitt graveyard; Tisdale was a veteran of the Civil War, having served four years in the Confederate Army, and was noted for his bravery.

Edward Regenhardt is rushing two jobs on Broadway; The Republican building is built up to the second story, and the old Ruesskamp property is rapidly disappearing to make room for the Federal Building.
