ANNA, Ill. -- Classrooms are empty at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School as strike by district's teachers begins; pupils, who had been told to report to school at regular time, are sent home by mid-morning.

ULLIN, Ill. -- As result of large amount of water used to fight fire that destroyed Phoenix Flour Mill here yesterday, water pressure is low, and residents are advised to boil their drinking water until further notice; also, residents along Cache River south of Ullin, Ill., are told not to eat fish from river due to possible chemical spill from destroyed mill.

50 years ago: Sept. 4, 1954

Following request by Ed Mitchell, manager of Cape Transit Co., for reduction in city license fees for city's seven buses, city council Friday voted revised fee -- $25 for first bus and $15 for each additional bus; Mitchell said company has lost heavily this summer and will have to cut its overhead or suspend operations.

Winner of Optimist Club amateur show at Jackson Homecomers is Mark Hunnecke of Webster Groves, soloist and dancer; Blackie Unger of Oak Ridge won old-fashioned fiddle contest last night, and Irene Jaeger of St. Louis was winner of 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air car.

75 years ago: Sept. 4, 1929

Application for formal permit from Missouri Railroad to cross tracks of Frisco Railroad in South Cape Girardeau is filed by Missouri Pacific at Jefferson City; it is proposed to construct crossing near where former Cape Girardeau Northern and Frisco tracks intersected.

John F. Vogelsanger, 72, proprietor of Vogelsanger Hardware Co., at 118 N. Main and dean of Cape Girardeau hardware dealers, formally retires from business.
