Cape Girardeau Senior Center hopes to host big New Year's Eve bash at its new building; preliminary work has begun at site and construction should begin immediately; if all goes well, building at 921 N. Clark should be finished in about four months; contractor is E.R. Thompson Construction Inc.

Cape Girardeau resident Yvonne Ketcham has agreed to be plaintiff in suit challenging validity of term-limits petitions because she opposes term limits and believes there is responsibility to see that signatures were gathered in compliance with the law; Ketcham says on surface term limits sound like good idea, but there are lot of problems with concept that voters need to consider.

25 years ago: Sept. 4, 1977

The Rev. Robert G. Bailey is installed as associate pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church; the Rev. David Hovis, staff member of Board of Missions for Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, preaches for occasion; the Rev. Dr. Herman Scherer, president of Missouri District of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, is installing officiant.

Mrs. Bee Seabaugh Limbaugh, 86, community leader for many years, died Friday at Southeast Missouri Hospital; she had been in ill health for some time; Limbaugh began her teaching career at age 16, teaching from then until her marriage to Rush H. Limbaugh in 1914; he survives, along with three sons, a brother and sister, and numerous grandchildren.

50 years ago: Sept. 4, 1952

Meeting in special session, city council approves appointment on temporary basis of E.L. Sailer as city engineer to succeed John R. Walther, who resigned Aug. 15; Sailer, civil engineer of long experience, served for number of years as city engineer and has been identified with many engineering projects here and at Jackson during past quarter century.

Reluctance of many Cape Girardeau swimmers toward use of inadequate swimming pool in Capaha Park - opened this summer for first time in three years - is reflected in daily attendance figures and receipts submitted to park commissioner; average of only 115 people per day used pool in 61 days it was open.

75 years ago: Sept. 4, 1927

The Rev. C.D. Lathrop, new rector of Christ Episcopal Church, held his initial service at his new charge in morning; Lathrop has been in Cape Girardeau several days and is guest of Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Zoelmann, 534 Washington Avenue; for past year he has been assistant pastor of Church of the Ascension in St. Louis.

Two-week revival meeting opens in evening at Maple Avenue Methodist Church and will continue each night; the Rev. R.J. Blount, pastor of Methodist church in Portageville, is speaker for revival, and he will be assisted by the Rev. J.A. Bertram, pastor of Maple Avenue.
