Cape Girardeau County chapter of American Family Association is organizing effort to urge Cape Girardeau cable television company to drop MTV from its service; Linda Lawrence, founder of local chapter, says group will have informational booth at SEMO District Fair next week and will be seeking signatures from Cape Girardeau residents on petition asking cable company to drop MTV; group is concerned about sexual overtones of videos shown on MTV and impact it has on youth.

More than 14,000 students are enrolled for fall semester at three higher-education institutions in Southeast Missouri, including more than 8,300 at Southeast Missouri State University; estimated 3,000 students are enrolled at Three Rivers College at Poplar Bluff and nearly 2,700 are enrolled in classes at Mineral Area Community College at Flat River.

25 years ago: Sept. 4, 1976

While others are observing Labor Day holiday tomorrow, SEMO District Fair workers and volunteers will be devoting their energies to setting up display tents for various exhibits; their effort will be one of most visible indicators of impending opening of fair, one week from Tuesday.

Charles A. Taylor of Eugene, Ore., has been appointed director of Cape Girardeau Civic Center, 201 N. Spanish; Taylor is son of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Taylor of Cape Girardeau; he received his bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1972, and was for a year graduate assistant in university's history department teaching African history.

50 years ago: Sept. 4, 1951

Jefferson City -- Cities and counties hit by mid-summer floods will get another $390,535 in federal emergency funds to repair roads and bridges and clean city streets; included among allotments were: Cape Girardeau County, $3,507; Cape Girardeau city, $12,000; Stoddard County, $3,500, and Dunklin County, $4,000.

Lower grades are crowded, particularly the first, at Washington and Franklin schools with start of new year that shows overall gain of 66 pupils this year compared with last; Supt. L.J. Schultz says he will have to study enrollment figures with relation to rooms available before making decision on what is to be done to relieve congestion.

75 years ago: Sept. 4, 1926

List of first purchases of $100,000 in stock in new traffic bridge drive is printed in The Missourian newspaper; largest purchaser was Marquette Cement Mfg. Co., $10,000.

New, 25-passenger bus of observation type, first used in this section, is placed in operation on run from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis by Southeast Missouri Transit Co.; it is fourth to be placed in service by this company; bus is equipped with modern devices, including roomier seats equipped with air cushions, electric fans and ice cooler, overhead racks for hats and bundles, and curtains on windows.- Sharon K.
