Commercial development now underway in the 600 block of South Kingshighway is creating flood problems in the area, says Allen F. The Cape Girardeau County Commission approves a $6 million bond issue for the SEMO Regional Port Authority that will go toward the development of a slack-water harbor, dock facility and railway extension at the port.

50 years ago: Sept. 30, 1960

Establishment in Cape Girardeau of a furniture and appliance store within the next few weeks is announced by Hopkins Brothers of Marble Hill, Mo.; Charles and Jack Hopkins say they have acquired a building at 2126 Broadway.

About 800 Brownies, Girl Scouts, Senior Scouts and leaders are expected for the sixth annual Girl Scout Football Rally to be held tomorrow in Capaha Park; district Scouts will be guests at the football game between the Cape State Indians and St. Benedict College of Atchison, Kan.

The Daily Republican publishes a "City Beautiful" edition, the proceeds from its sale going to the Women's Relief Corps for the erection of a memorial fountain in Courthouse Park.

James E. Watson, a national orator, and Charles A. Crow, representative from this district, will meet the people of the city and surrounding country in the Courthouse Park this evening; all are invited to hear these Republican statesmen discuss the issues confronting the people.
