50 years ago: Sept. 30, 1959

Harold O. Grauel, a master Mason in Cape Girardeau's St. Mark's Lodge No. 93 for 23 years, becomes its third member in 106 years to become grand master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Grauel is installed in the morning by James M. Bradford, past grand master.

Construction of the new administration building at the municipal airport, delayed for two months until door frames could be delivered, will be resumed immediately; the frames, ordered last May 1, arrived yesterday.

75 years ago: Sept. 30, 1934

Construction of a service station unit, cafe, barbershop and facilities for tourists on an acre-site at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Highway 74, southwest of Cape Girardeau, will begin Monday, said J.H. Adams, owner of the site; the unit will be at the northeast corner of the intersection in an area near the overhanging bluffs.

The Rev. James C. Dockens of Port Arthur, Texas, has arrived in Cape Girardeau to take over the pastorate of the First Pentecostal Church; he succeeds the Rev. J.B. Howard, who has gone to Atlantic City, N.J.

100 years ago: Sept. 30, 1909

Jimmie Phillips reports the new automobile line between Cape Girardeau and Jackson is proving quite popular; his father is in St. Louis purchasing equipment for the business, and will buy another big touring car for the line.

James D. Sharp of Edna, whose storehouse and stock of merchandise were destroyed by fire recently, passes through Cape Girardeau in the morning, taking the steamer Saltillo here for Metropolis, Ill., where he will go into business; Sharp is accompanied by his family.
