Classes for 6,053 public and parochial school pupils begin anew in the morning at 12 Cape Girardeau schools; the total attendance on the first day of school this year is 287 greater than the first-day total last year; yet to be counted here is the number of attendees at Campus School, which doesn't open until next Monday.

Lightning strips shingles from the steeple of the First Presbyterian Church at Lorimier Street and Broadway in the morning; church secretary Mrs. Paul Bray calls the fire department, but there is no blaze.

1938

The big advance on Cape Girardeau is underway; in a gigantic maneuver, delegates to the state American Legion convention are converging on Cape Girardeau from every nook and corner of Missouri.

No organization has volunteered to sponsor or publicly support a bond issue proposal in Cape Girardeau, says Mayor Edward L. Drum; in fact, he says very few individuals have said they favor issuing bonds for the purpose of sponsoring PWA projects within the city.

1913

Fred A. Groves, president and manager of the Southeast Missouri Motor Car Co., with a salesroom and garage next door to The Republican office on Broadway, will give up that building Oct. 1 in order to concentrate his business in his own building on Spanish Street; on Oct. 1, Walter Black, prince of auto drivers, will take over the Broadway location and use it as headquarters for his auto business.

On a motion by Councilman C.B. Hoeller at a city council meeting last night, the water and light franchise ordinance has been sent to the judiciary and water and light committees for consideration.
