25 years ago: Sept. 26, 1986

Although construction is well underway on the multipurpose building here, the Cape Girardeau City Council and the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents have yet to pick a name for the facility; three months ago, the board of managers recommended it be named the River Heritage Center.

Congressman Jim Wright of Texas tells a crowd of about 300 people if they aren't pleased with the nation's economic situation, they should send a clear message to Washington by using Wayne Cryts as messenger; Wright speaks at a $25-a-person fundraiser on behalf of the 8th District Democratic congressional challenger.

50 years ago: Sept. 26, 1961

It is announced that William Anderson has sold the Southeast Weekly Bulletin newspaper in Cape Girardeau to Record Publications Inc., of which Mrs. W.G. Hart is secretary-treasurer.

Homer George, owner of Broadway Prescription Shop, who has taken national leadership in promoting poison prevention, has been notified a bill designating National Poison Prevention Week has passed both houses of Congress and been sent to President Kennedy for signing.

75 years ago: Sept. 26, 1936

ST. LOUIS -- Oscar A. Knehans, Cape Girardeau lawyer and former judge, is named referee in bankruptcy for the Southeast Missouri division by federal Judges Charles B. Davis and George H. Moore; Knehans will preside at Cape Girardeau.

At the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Missouri next week in St. Louis, Dr. G.W. Walker of Cape Girardeau will become grand master of the lodge in the state, the highest post in the organization.

100 years ago: Sept. 26, 1911

Sen. Thomas F. Lane, having accepted the position of Cape Girardeau city counselor, according to the state constitution will have to resign his seat in the Senate; the governor will have to call a special election in the district to fill the vacancy.

Capt. Thomas Baldwin's big flying machine is ready for its flight; his mechanic has had a crowd of interested spectators watching him as he assembled the airplane at the fairgrounds, ready for Baldwin's flying exhibitions during Fair Week.
