An exchange student from Mexico City -- Maru Adame, 15 -- staying with an Oak Ridge family has received word that members of her family were unharmed in the severe earthquakes that have rocked that region.

50 years ago: Sept. 26, 1960

SIKESTON, Mo. -- C.E. "Daddy" Felker, former mayor, drops out of the city election race, formally withdrawing his name as a nominee at large for a place on the city council under the new city manager form of government; in so doing, Felker hints that he may be retiring from politics; he has been a political worker and office holder in Sikeston and Scott County since 1912.

Petitions asking an initiative election for adoption of an ordinance which would grant length-of-service pay increases to members of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department are filed with Verna Lee Landis, city clerk; the petitions have a total of 1,934 signatures.

75 years ago: Sept. 26, 1935

Disappointed but not regretful, Missouri's Golden Troopers, the state champion American Legion drum and bugle corps, return home from the national Legion convention in St. Louis; outpacing all others in the contest was the unit from San Gabriel, Calif.

Work has been completed on the painting of the exterior of the large, two-story brick residence at 528 Broadway, in light gray trimmed in green; the residence is occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson, Fannie Fine, Olga Wood and Irma Huters.

100 years ago: Sept. 26, 1910

The Rev. John Muehlsiepen has been appointed pastor to succeed the late Rev. F. Klein at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, Mo.; the new pastor has been located at Weingarten, Mo., for many years.

The Methodists at Jackson dedicate their new, $30,000 edifice, a large crowd attending to hear the dedicatory sermon by Bishop Collins Denny.
