Melanie Starkman has joined the staff of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she is serving as full-time music director.

1963

Sandblasting has begun on the traffic bridge across the Mississippi River here by Adams Building Maintenance Corp. of Chicago; Adams also has the painting contract; it will be the first time the bridge will be painted with brushes instead of spray guns.

Robert W. Clark, District Five engineer for the Federal Aviation Agency, tells Cape Girardeau civic leaders he feels the best solution to the city's airport problem would involve a new east-west runway of about 6,000 feet; the present 4,000-foot runway, which extends north and south, is too short for the larger airplanes being used by Ozark Airlines.

1938

The memory of Maj. Malcolm C. Keene, former corps officer of the Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau, who died Tuesday in Phoenix, is honored at a special memorial service at the Salvation Army hall in the evening; Keene served untiringly during the 1937 flood here.

Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Stacy of Cape Girardeau return from St. Louis, where they had gone to see their son, Jesse Stacy, perform as a pianist with the Benny Goodman 15-piece orchestra; the band played a concert and for a ball at the Municipal Auditorium on Friday night.

1913

The safe in the Commerce, Mo., post office was recently given a terrific blowing by robbers, who knew little of their trade and failed to profit by their hard work; three charges of "soup" were used, but still the robbers failed to gain access to the safe, which held more than $300.

Isaac Newton "Dad" Anderson died last night in his sleep at age 90 years, 7 months and 6 days; he was born on the Atlantic Ocean as his parents were en route from Scotland to America.
