A sports journalist with experience on newspapers in Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma has been appointed sports editor of the Southeast Missourian; Marty Mishow, who recently was sports editor of the Duncan (Okla.) Banner, began his new duties last week.

Rain drenches Cape Girardeau and most of the area, bringing with it the first crisp touch of autumn; Cape Girardeau receives 0.51 of an inch of rain.

50 years ago: Sept. 25, 1959

Petitions bearing the names of 607 signers asking the State Park Board to approve the removal of a gate across the Moccasin Springs Branch Road have been sent to the board's office in Jefferson City; the petition points out the road had been used for many years, and that closing it took away a public use.

A new charter was presented to Troop 4, sponsored by the Men's Fellowship of the First Presbyterian Church, in ceremonies last night; it was received by Scoutmaster Arthur Jackson and his assistant, William Anderson.

75 years ago: Sept. 25, 1934

Contract for paving the remainder of the Bloomfield Road, from the end of the present pavement to connect with U.S. 61, is let by the Cape Girardeau Special Road District Commission to F.W. Keller, on a bid of $3,052; the bid covers 2,300 square yards of paving.

Approximately 1,500 people attend the moonlight excursion aboard the steamer President; a total of 1,387 people pay admission of 75 cents for the excursion, while there were several complimentary tickets; the dance excursion is sponsored by Missouri's Golden Troopers, the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps.

100 years ago: Sept. 25, 1909

The Sikeston, Mo., horse show concluded its third annual meeting yesterday with another triumph; larger crowds than ever attended each of the three days, and the finest lot of animals ever shown in Southeast Missouri was exhibited.

O.J. Wilhelmi, building architect for the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis, comes down and is met at the train by Dr. Otto E. Forster, president of the Cape Brewery; Wilhelmi will design new additions and improvements to the brewery here.
