25 years ago: Sept. 25, 1982

Delmer A. Cobble of Jackson, a longtime educator appointed to the Missouri State Board of Education in 1977, has been selected as its president for 1982-1983.

Robert L. Knight, the chairman of the Scott City Police Personnel Board, tenders his resignation, citing a "current atmosphere of distrust and animosity"; the community's police department has been the subject of controversy and dissension in past months.

50 years ago: Sept. 25, 1957

Cape Girardeau County and postal officials say they will join efforts for an overpass for Hopper Road at the point where it now is proposed to sever the road into two sections without a connecting link by the planned interstate highway; Postmaster Ted Regenhardt says mail service into the area will be substantially hampered if there is no overpass.

The face-lifting of historic Common Pleas Courthouse is still progressing; scaffolding has been erected by a plastering firm to place a one-inch coat of concrete stucco on the stately wooden columns of the building.

75 years ago: Sept. 25, 1932

A two-day celebration, marking the 100th anniversary of the Whitewater Presbyterian Church in the northern part of Bollinger County, began yesterday; in the afternoon, the Rev. W.M. Griffin, former pastor, recites the history of the church.

The Rev. Eberhardt B. Pruente, for 51 years pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, and dean of the St. Louis Archdiocese, dies of lung congestion and other complications; he was 77 years old; he conducted his last service at St. Mary's on Sept. 11, complaining after the service of feeling ill.

100 years ago: Sept. 25, 1907

The new vaudeville theater on Main Street, near Glenn's big store, is rapidly nearing completion; the stage has already been completed, with the exception of hanging the curtains; it will take only a day or so to put in the rest of the fixtures; the theater is still unnamed.

A party of prominent southsiders and Good Hope Street residents leave Cape Girardeau early in the morning for two days of hunting squirrels and bears and fishing; taking part are J.E. Miller, M.T. Faust, Thomas J. Miller, Charles Huttman and Joe Keys.
