Rush H. Limbaugh Sr. is named the recipient of the first "Friend of the University" award by the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation; he will receive the award during Homecoming festivities.

A.C. Brase, a member of the Arena Improvement Association, announces the group has purchased a Baldwin organ and an improved public address system, which will be installed Monday in the Arena Building; the organ will be dedicated to the late Weir Barcus, manager of the Chamber of Commerce.
The cost of living may be going down, but the cost of beer drinking is soaring; prices generally of all types of beer advanced this week, with premium brands selling in most taverns at 30 cents or even 35 cents, and others at 25 cents.
75 years ago: Sept. 24, 1933
A large crowd gathers at Fairground Park for Vangilder Day; Elam Vangilder hurls for the Johnstons, turning back the highly-touted Anna (Ill.) State Hospital team 5-3; Vangilder is touched for 10 hits, but he keeps them scattered with the exception of the first and eighth innings, when the visitors score their runs.
A light rain, accompanied by a high wind, sweeps Cape Girardeau in the evening; the wind tears limbs from trees in Courthouse and Fairground parks, but no extensive damage is done.
100 years ago: Sept. 24, 1908
Gov. Guy Folk arrives in Cape Girardeau in the morning from St. Louis; he will give a speech at the Jackson Homecomers event this afternoon; around midmorning, the governor and his party drive up Broadway to where The Republican's new building is under construction.
Walter Bellows, a worker at the brick plant in Cape Girardeau, breaks his arm when he gets caught in the belt of a machine; he is thrown violently against the ground, snapping the bone between the elbow and the wrist.
