PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Burglars last night broke into the Rozier Mercantile Co., stealing cash and checks amounting to $3,954.54; entrance was gained through a second-story window by means of a 20-foot ladder which, leaning against the adjacent Presbyterian Church building, was borrowed by the burglars.

Water Street is beginning to take on its former appearance as the railroad tracks have been moved back to about their former location and the block from Independence to Themis Street cleared of debris; the street has been limited to one-way traffic since the start of construction of the floodwall three years ago.

75 years ago: Sept. 24, 1935

Cape Girardeau's Golden Troopers, the three-time state champion American Legion drum and bugle corps, delivered their 15-minute drill yesterday afternoon at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, just proceeding the opening of the game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Still looking for solutions to the problem of overcrowded public school buildings, the school board has hired an additional instructor, Walter W. Ford, to teach history and geography at May Greene School.

100 years ago: Sept. 24, 1910

Charley McDonald's big, two-day barbecue starts in the afternoon down near the old tollgate on South Sprigg Street Road; four kinds of meats have been barbecued, and plenty is served anyone paying a half dollar; two immense platforms have been constructed under the trees, about four feet apart, allowing whites to dance on one and blacks on the other.

Royal Matthews, a farmer living near Poplar Bluff, Mo., has rented 30 acres of the Thilenius place, west of Cape Girardeau, and will raise fine, blooded livestock.
