1987

The City Council is considering a measure that would eliminate all billboards in the city within seven years; council members generally expressed support for such a measure at last night's study session.

Bollinger County Associate Circuit Judge Bill Hopkins will begin hearing some cases in Cape Girardeau County on a regular basis; Presiding Judge A.J. Seier explained that the case load of the 32nd Judicial Circuit is being redistributed and that Hopkins asked to be allowed to hear more cases here.

1962

The State Highway Department reports that the new dual-lane pavement of Highway 61 beneath the Interstate 55 overpass at Wedekind Park will be put into use on Monday morning; traffic to Cape Girardeau will move over the original right of way on the south side of Wedekind Park; traffic to Jackson will move over the new section on the north side of the park, which in recent months has been used for the two-way traffic.

It's apple butter time; the women of Grace Methodist Church make the treat out of doors, in big iron kettles; Friday, the women gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Wilkinson, 2855 Bloomfield Rd., and with 20 bushels of fall apples and lots of spices, made 240 quarts of the butter; proceeds from the sale of the delicacy will go to the group's activities as they assist the church.

By shortly after noon, 120 delegates had registered for the two-day convention of the Missouri District of the Evangelical Women's Union, being held at Christ Evangelical Church.

After working on the proposal for six weeks and getting the sanction of the local physicians and hospitals, the Linda Richards Club of nurses draws up a formal petition on eight-hour nursing; it is to the effect that private duty nurses of this city and vicinity have agreed to do eight-hour duty nursing in hospitals and homes, with one meal per nurse, to be paid by the patient to the hospital.

1912

Today closes the year's work of Dr. Ivan Lee Holt as pastor of Centenary Methodist Church and, unless the conference of the Methodist church sends him back, Centenary's congregation will lose the pastor who has done such good work the past year; Holt has been offered the pastorate of the Raynes Memorial Church at New Orleans at a much larger salary than he is getting here; the conference will meet this week at Dexter, Mo.

The Rev. A. Wilder, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, goes to Poplar Bluff, Mo., to serve the Lutheran congregation at that place.
