Starting this evening, Cape Girardeau residents are able to see one of their on the silver screen; Gene Dockery, a 21-year-old security guard for Procter & Gamble, is part of the cast of "The River Rat," showing at the Town Plaza Cinema.

A professor of English at Southeast Missouri State University, Dr. Robert W. Hamblin, has been named by the National Endowment for the Humanities to direct a 1985 summer seminar for secondary schoolteachers; the seminar will deal with author William Faulkner.

50 years ago: Sept. 21, 1959

A number of construction projects in Cape Girardeau and the area, including the women's dormitory and women's physical education building at State College, are stalled by a wage contract controversy between carpenters and contractors.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department is given authority by the City Council to order radio equipment to be installed in new headquarters at the recently acquired Grace Methodist Church at Sprigg and Independence.

75 years ago: Sept. 21, 1934

W.F.D. Batjer, secretary of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, becomes the new chairman of the relief committee for Cape Girardeau County, succeeding Sen. R.L. Dearmont, who resigned.

The stock and fixtures of Thractenberg's, a women's furnishings store at 111 N. Main St., has been purchased by the Missouri Brokerage Co., 44-46 N. Main St., and is moved to the latter location; Meyer Thractenberg, manager of the sold establishment, plans to move with his family to Chicago.

100 years ago: Sept. 21, 1909

Charles H. Daues of Cape Girardeau will keep his position as assistant district attorney in St. Louis, when District Attorney Henry W. Blodgett resigns to resume his private practice; Daues became first assistant nearly two years ago.

The many friends of the Rev. G.E. Heidel are pleased to learn of his reappointment to the German Methodist Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau.
