Cape Girardeau County Commission is discussing whether to support proposal to construct Interstate 55 interchange between U.S. 61 and Fruitland intersections; city councils of Jackson and Cape Girardeau have passed joint resolution urging Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission to move forward with project; endorsement of county commission likely would aid the project.

There are 159 fewer students enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University this fall semester than year ago, final census shows.

25 years ago: Sept. 21, 1979

Hearing continues in circuit court regarding Cape Girardeau's proposed annexation of 4,350 acres; Kent Bratton, assistant director of Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission, which prepared annexation proposal for city, testifies that part of land in annexation area, near Diversion Channel, is prone to flooding and has slope of less than 5 percent, making it difficult for water to drain off.

Canadian rock group The Guess Who is scheduled to perform Monday at Houck Field House; tickets range from $4 in advance to $5 at door for students and $6 for general public.

50 years ago: Sept. 21, 1954

About 500 letters have been mailed to former residents of Illmo and residents of outlying rural area by invitation committee inviting them to be guests of Golden Jubilee committee on opening day of 50th anniversary of founding of Illmo; this will take place Oct. 7 and has been designated "homecoming day."

Under direction of Charles B. Bollinger, manager of former Cape County Milling Co., Mill C at Burfordville, 500 bushels of rice are being stored at mill.

75 years ago: Sept. 21, 1929

Seventy-first annual Cape Girardeau County Fair closes in evening; closing features of exposition is parade of livestock and free attractions program.

Workers begin pouring concrete for abutments for new bridge being built across Cape LaCroix Creek on Gordonville Road west of Cape Girardeau; structure is being built by Cape Special Road District; 70-foot steel span will be constructed across creek.
