Veteran firefighter and Assistant Fire Chief Max Jauch has been appointed interim fire chief of Cape Girardeau Fire Department; Jauch, 48, will service as fire chief until permanent chief is named, sometime after first of the year.

Student group opposed to more stringent residence hall rules at Southeast Missouri State University set up encampment yesterday on east terraces, across from Social Science Building, to begin a protest; rules affect hours and conditions under which members of opposite sex may visit in dormitory rooms; encampment is meant to call attention to students' complaints and promote rally scheduled for Wednesday on front steps of Academic Hall.
Members of Chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee, concerned that Federal Aviation Administration might close Municipal Airport flight control tower, will send five to six people to public hearing in Kansas City Oct. 7; FAA plans to close 73 towers.

Federal rulings on use of school-age children as cotton pickers are causing "confusion and concern" among Southeast Missouri's cotton farmers, says Hilton Bracey, executive vice president of Missouri Cotton Producers Association; area office of Wage and Hour and Public Contracts Division of Department of Labor has ruled that sharecroppers or tenant farmers are classified as employees of landowner, thus making landowner liable for any violation of federal labor laws; effect of ruling would make it illegal for landowner to allow tenant's children to pick cotton.
New front is being placed on Good Hope street side of Bamby Baking Co. building, corner of Good Hope and Frederick; front will be of buff brick from sidewalk level upward short distance, then will have three six-foot panes of glass with buff brick above.
75 years ago: Sept. 20, 1927
Construction of new building and installation of dial-automatic system of telephones, with aggregate expenditure of at least $250,000, are being considered by Cape Girardeau Bell Telephone Co.
Illmo -- With building to be occupied by new shoe factory nearing completion, it is expected that new machinery will be moved into structure early in October and that it will be in operation by Nov. 1.
