25 years ago: Sept. 2, 1982

The campaigns of two Missouri congressional candidates will get a boost next month when Vice President George Bush appears in their behalf; Bush is scheduled to be here Sept. 30 to endorse Rep. Bill Emerson's bid for reelection; Bush will also be at Blue Springs, Mo., Sept. 28 in support of Wendel Bailey, candidate for the 4th District.

Citing the need to maintain an "austere program" in the operation of county government and the need to give property taxpayers "a little relief," the Cape Girardeau County Court eliminates the general revenue tax.

50 years ago: Sept. 2, 1957

Most stores are closed, as are city and county offices, in observance of the Labor Day holiday; the only community celebration is the annual Knights of Columbus Labor Day Picnic on the K. of C. grounds.

Howard Pulliam, 34, of Cape Girardeau, suffers a crushed shoulder, a broken collar bone and possible internal injuries, when an automobile jack slips out from under the right rear wheel of his car, and it falls on him while he is under it tightening the brakes.

75 years ago: Sept. 2, 1932

The city of Sikeston, Mo., loses in the Missouri Supreme Court its suit to oust the Missouri Utilities Co., which has continued to operate there since expiration of its 20-year franchise Dec. 15, 1922; for some time the utility has been operating in competition with Sikeston's municipally-owned electric light and power plant.

When construction starts on the building of Highway 55, from Chaffee south to near Morley, it will be the first project in Southeast Missouri under the new emergency unemployment program inaugurated by the State Highway Department.

100 years ago: Sept. 2, 1907

Labor Day. Union labor of Cape Girardeau makes a fine showing; the parade is participated in by over 1,100 men, all garbed in the uniforms peculiar to their occupations; unions represented in the march are tailors, railroad car men, railroad machinists, brewery workers, clerks, bartenders, barbers, cigar makers, and boiler makers.

Henry W. Klaproth Sr., one of the oldest residents of Cape Girardeau County, died Saturday at age 92 years, 10 months and 1 day.
