In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force, the Straight Arrow Drill Team performs a formal retreat ceremony in front of the Air Force ROTC headquarters at Southeast Missouri State University; cadets who take part in the ceremony are Mark Munsell, Ross Gartman, Chad Bartholomew, Brent Green and Deanna Martin.

B&G Ceramics has opened at 713 Broadway; Barbara Rider is the owner and operator of the new shop, which stocks a complete line of ceramic supplies.

1962

About 75 members of the National Farm Organization appeared Monday at the Central Packing Co. plant here; they were allowed to inspect the stock pens as a check on the number and quality of hogs and cattle on hand.

Members of the city council have agreed to correct what petitioners describe as "a dense wilderness harboring snakes and rodents" on West Broadway; the task of correcting a city-caused situation of 10 to 12 years ago in the 2000 block of Broadway has been given to the health and public works departments.

1937

Eight members of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department have been measured for new uniforms, which will be navy blue surge coats and pants; no new caps were ordered, as members will wear their old ones; the uniforms were purchased through S.W. Collins at the Buckner Ragsdale store.

Solomon "Smokey" Eulinberg succumbed last night at Jackson to a complication of diseases and the ravages of advanced age; Eulinberg, who was born into slavery a few miles west of Jackson, was 84 years old.

1912

One person was killed and about 20 injured when a train running on the Hunter branch of the Frisco plunged through a high trestle near Chaonia, Mo., about 3 p.m. yesterday; the dead and injured are brought to Cape Girardeau on a special relief train; all the dead and injured are connected with the La Mont Bros. dog and pony show and reside at Elmo, Ill..

N.C. Schlemmer, who left here a boy 40 years ago and who hasn't been here since a visit 25 years ago, is the guest of his cousin, Mrs. Otto Eckhardt; Schlemmer is postmaster at Austin, Texas.
