Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors has endorsed proposal for city's purchase of Cape Girardeau water system from Union Electric; City Council has placed $11.8 million bond issue on November ballot to allow voters to decide whether city should purchase water system; bond issue includes $8.5 million for purchase of system and additional funds for operating costs and system improvements.

Lexington Avenue arterial project will soon be extended to Route W near Kingshighway on city's west side; City Engineer J. Kensey Russell says that all but small section of temporary roadway is paved on section of street from Carolina to Route W.

25 years ago: Sept. 18, 1976

Blessed with perfect weather throughout week, SEMO District Fair closes out in evening; large crowds pack fairgrounds, many coming to see big attraction of day - Brenda Lee show; it is first fair week in many years that Cape Girardeau escaped rain.

Persistent dry spell continues to cause some area residents inconveniences, but there aren't any reports of serious water shortage threats in immediate vicinity; aside from Fredericktown and Ironton, cities in area obtain their water from deep wells and streams, and supply is plentiful; Fredericktown and Ironton are served by reservoirs, and officials in those towns say there is no threat to their water supplies.

50 years ago: Sept. 18, 1951

City's $165,000 fire protection program moved another step forward yesterday, when City Council entered order to Missouri Utilities Co. for installation of 158 additional fire hydrants; hydrants are those recommended for installation by Missouri Inspection Bureau in letter on May 1, 1950, which followed comprehensive survey of water facilities of city.

Election at which Goshen School District was purported to have been annexed by Oak Ridge School District has been held invalid by Judge J. Henry Caruthers in Common Pleas Court; Caruthers found 14 points of irregularity in conduct of last spring's election; since matter was in litigation, Goshen has continued to hold classes this year, rather than send pupils to Oak Ridge.

75 years ago: Sept. 18, 1926

W.E. Davenport of Cape Girardeau, fireman on north-bound Frisco passenger train, was seriously injured when locomotive and three cars of fast flyer were derailed near Harvard, Ark., few miles from Memphis, Tenn., last night; although complete details of wreck are lacking, it is said locomotive turned over, side-swiping cars standing on adjacent track.

Steps are being taken to incorporate local post of American Legion; new officers for Legion were selected at recent meeting; they are: Commander, Renfro Gibbs; first vice commander, C.G. McClintock; second vice commander, Alfred Hirsch; post adjutant, George Steck; historian, Victor Drumm, and sergeant at arms, Curt Pott.- Sharon K. Sanders
