The exhibition hall at the SEMO District Fair received a face-lift this year thanks primarily to the work of James Kidd; the retired carpenter and fair board member worked night and day to complete the new wooden partitions at the Arena Building; the new booths can be easily assembled and disassembled.

Area orchardists are expecting a bountiful harvest of apples this year; harvest is in full swing at Pioneer Orchard and Knollcrest Orchards in Jackson, and Diebold's Orchards in Kelso, Mo.

A former Jackson woman, Jeannine Crader, who rose from a high school quartet to the Metropolitan Opera, was one of three Americans lauded yesterday after their Italian debut in Milan; Crader, a soprano, and the two others performed leading roles in Puccini's opera, "Tosca;" Crader is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Crader of Jackson.

The 1963 SEMO District Fair at Arena Park is in the record books; despite problems with weather, it turned out to be a fairly successful fair; total attendance for the six days ending yesterday was 56,904.

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Cotton farmers in Mississippi County, who haven't done so, have received final warning that they must destroy excess acreage of cotton if they expect to share in the government's bounty under the Wallace farm program; those who have to destroy their cotton say they will plow it under, although cotton fields are snowy white.

It looks like old times at Fairground Park, when a trainer works out a gaited horse hitched to a sulky; the 4-year-old chestnut stallion is owned by Grace Flentge and will race at the Oak Ridge Fair.

S.B. Hunter, the Southeast Missouri capitalist who has made his home in St. Louis, has decided to move to Cape Girardeau; he has leased the L.J. Albert home on Lorimier Street, which is being renovated and improved; Mr. and Mrs. Hunter expect to take possession of it early in October.

The Cape Girardeau City Council on Monday night passed an ordinance containing the 20-year franchise governing the water and light service here; it is now up to Mayor F.A. Kage to sign the ordinance to make it law.
