Murphysboro, Ill. - While touring recent hardwood timber cuts in Shawnee National Forest yesterday, U.S. Rep. Glenn Poshard, D-Ill., called for one-year moratorium on timber harvesting in the forest; moratorium is needed, he said, because environmental and economic "soundness" of timber harvesting in national forests still needs to be debated.
New state regulations have left Southeast Missouri without any hospital designated as trauma center; but administrators at several regional hospitals say that their hospital will continue to provide care for trauma patients; both Cape Girardeau hospitals have decided they can't meet manpower requirements needed to maintain trauma-center designation.

Gordonville - Decision to return only rural postal route back to Gordonville will likely be made in near future, says U.S. Postal Service official; change would mean residents outside community who formerly went by rural Gordonville addresses would again use Gordonville addresses; residents here recently formed committee to protest post office's decision to change rural postal deliver from Gordonville to Cape Girardeau Route 3.
It's bargain day at SEMO District Fair; all rides are reduced by 25 cents; with Cape Girardeau schools dismissing early, and free student admission until 2 p.m., big crowd is expected; before grandstand this evening will be Blue Grass Shows and Joie Chitwood Thrill Show.

The Rev. E.F. Fisher, who has been pastor of West Side Church of God since Easter Sunday 1947, has resigned and accepted pastorate of First Church of God at Harrisburg, Ill.
Bishop Homer A. Tomlinson, general overseer of Church of God, who is on nationwide tour advocating his candidacy for presidency on "platform of righteousness," formally dedicates Missouri headquarters of campaign at 138 Pearl Street; he designates the Rev. J.L. Rogers, pastor of Church of God, as manager of Missouri campaign.
75 years ago: Sept. 16, 1926
Organization of Optimist Club in Cape Girardeau has been completed, and it is announced at noon luncheon that charter will be presented to club on Oct. 7, when district governor will be present; W.H. Kiehne was elected first president of club; other officers are: First vice president, Gust Schultz; second vice president, C.L. Cherry; third vice president, Earl McBride; fourth vice president, E.E. Vosburgh; secretary and treasurer, W.G. Yardley; chaplain, A.J. Reese, and sergeant at arms, Paul Finney.
