Withstanding gusting winds and defying impending rains, more than 200 volunteers stood at intersections, in front of stores and at local businesses yesterday morning, hawking newspapers for benefit of Youth, Education, Learning and Literacy - YELL; volunteers in Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City raised more than $19,200 selling newspapers on street corners.
Two storm cells brought nearly 1 1/2 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 35 mph to Cape Girardeau yesterday afternoon, causing scattered power outages and wiping out events at SEMO District Fair; moderate-sized crowd attending fair took cover in tents and A.C. Brase Arena Building when first rains came shortly after 3 p.m., with storms following about hour later.

Ste. Genevieve. Mo. - Investigators are probing cause of fire at Ste. Genevieve Nursing Home which last night claimed life of elderly patient and city fireman; Albert J. Munier, 98, of Perryville was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital from apparent smoke inhalation; Stanley J. Schwent, 53, Ste. Genevieve fireman, was also pronounced dead at hospital; cause of his death may have been either smoke inhalation or heart attack.
One issue that apparently will have to be dealt with when county court begins negotiations for new contract with Cape County Private Ambulance Service, Inc., is $5,349.55 subsidy adjustment due county for 1977; adjustment was overlooked by county officials last January, when, under terms of contract, $80,000 subsidy paid company in 1977 should have been adjusted downward to $74,650.45.

Enthusiastic officials of SEMO District Fair, viewing crowd of thousands Monday night as possible forerunner of things to come, look to tonight's major entertainment program and to Wednesday's full schedule -- including racing -- as added inducement to area's fairgoers.
First formal steps to inaugurate establishment of county law library were taken by Cape County Bar Association at meeting at Jackson on Monday; details, such as location of library, additional means of support and its operation, remain to be worked out.
75 years ago: Sept. 15, 1928
A.Q. Carter, president of First National Bank in Dexter, will succeed John F. Lilly as vice president and cashier of Sturdivant Bank in Cape Girardeau; Lilly will leave that position Sept. 18, having resigned to take post as national bank examiner.
Claiming there was more work in the job than he first thought, Steve Penney, contractor for removing old building and making necessary excavation for new Cherry floral building on Broadway, calls off his force of workers from site, according to J.T. Cherry, owner of property; work had been going on for about a month; approximately three-fourths of excavation has been completed.
