50 years ago: Sept. 14, 1954

Blue, red and white ribbons begin appearing at SEMO District Fair, and more will be seen over grounds Wednesday as judging of hundreds of items of exhibits, from livestock to clothing, hits its peak.

Final call for reservation of memorial units in new Southeast Missouri Hospital is issued by Jack O. Knehans, general chairman of $350,000 hospital building fund; overall, campaign proceeds are reported at $315,802.

75 years ago: Sept. 14, 1929

John Philip Sousa, world-renowned bandmaster, is guest of Cape Girardeau; arriving with his band at noon, he is greeted at Frisco passenger station by large crowd; afternoon concert for children is moved again, back to terraces of Teachers College, where he plays before crowd of between 7,500 and 10,000; in evening, he plays second concert at college auditorium.

BENTON, Mo. -- Alice Lumm, Commerce High School student, was named queen at annual Neighbor Day program at Benton.
