Rain scattered an afternoon crowd yesterday afternoon and cut deeply into the evening crowd; but the SEMO District Fair goes into Cape Girardeau Day and Cape County School Day with every indication that -- barring more rain -- an all-time record attendance will be set.
The State College Board of Regents takes under advisement bids received for construction of a new women's dormitory and allied bids for kitchen equipment to serve a 200-capacity cafeteria that will be an integral part of the four-unit structure.
75 years ago: Sept. 11, 1933
Preliminary class work begins in the public schools of Cape Girardeau; in the 1B grade of Jefferson School are three sets of twins: Maxine and Nadine Green, Wesley and Leslie Rees and Gerald and Geraldine Flanery.
There are 220 freshmen enrolled at Teachers College by noon; during a morning assembly for the newcomers, Professor H.O. Grauel, sponsor of the freshman class, welcomes his new charges; he explains to them the honor and glory of wearing green caps from enrollment day to Thanksgiving Day.
100 years ago: Sept. 11, 1908
More passenger facilities will be given the Houck Railroad next week, when a second motor car is installed into service; the car is expected today or tomorrow; just where it will be used on the line hasn't been decided, according to L.B. Houck.
William Philips of New York arrives in Cape Girardeau to consult with M.E. Leming and C.J. Crawford in regard to the new cement factory; finding that Crawford hadn't yet returned from the East, however, Philips continues on to Memphis, Tenn.
