The Cape Girardeau County grand jury adjourns, issuing a two-page report to Presiding Circuit Judge A.J. Seier, who says he will study it before deciding whether to make the contents public; meanwhile, Prosecuting Attorney Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr., who has advocated grand juries partially to eliminate the preliminary hearing process, says he will ask Seier to impanel another grand jury; the jury was impanelled July 7 to look into two unsolved murders in Cape Girardeau.

Prices for regular-grade gasoline at self-service outlets in Cape Girardeau have dropped 15 cents in the last week, from $1.23 cents a gallon to just under $1.08.

50 years ago: Aug. 9, 1957

The former Maier Auto Supply, 144 S. Sprigg St., in Cape Girardeau, has been purchased by William Schlattman and will be operated as the Cape Tire Mart.

Clarence Schade, owner of a clothing store in Jackson, has purchased the stock of Cofer's Store in Cape Girardeau, owned by the late Leon Haman, and has taken over its operation; his brother, A.A. Schade, will manage the Jackson store, while he will move to Cape Girardeau to operate the store there.

75 years ago: Aug. 9, 1932

The retirement of May Greene, who has taught in Cape Girardeau's public schools 53 years, is announced by the school board; Alice Carroll will succeed her as principal of Washington School.

With the right of way to be secured through but two more parcels of land, contract for construction of Highway 34 through Cape Girardeau County should happen any time; the remaining parcels are in Byrd Township, and a right-of-way committee is negotiating with landowners for the sections needed.

100 years ago: Aug. 9, 1907

R.H. Schultz, formerly with the Frisco Railroad at Cape Girardeau, and until a few days ago employed in the general offices of the Frisco at St. Louis, has accepted the job of auditor and assistant general freight agent of the Houck roads.

An early morning fire destroys the house occupied by Fred Steinborn and family at 6 N. Pacific St.; Steinborn and a few neighbors are able to save some of the furnishings.
