Legal wrangling over interpretation of ruling concerning collection of city sales tax by state university for on-campus sales is delaying any action by city of Cape Girardeau in seeking remittance by Southeast Missouri State University; court ruled in 1976 that tax must be collected on "non-educational sales"; lawyers have been haggling since then over meaning of that term.

Thunderstorms which roll across region late in day cause some minor wind damage, with greatest property loss reported near Oriole; Robert C. Sides home on Route Y is struck by lightning, shattering windows and knocking siding off two-story structure; while family is uninjured, dog near house is killed.

50 years ago: Aug. 8, 1952

Critically hit by one of worst summer droughts on record, Cape Girardeau County's stricken dairy farmers are scouring country for miles around in search of hay for their herds and are becoming desperate in their efforts to find supply of feed for winter use; problem isn't only theirs, for hanging in balance is milk supply during fall and winter when production is ordinarily low.

Letter mail pouch containing several large checks, one for $5,000, and three bags of parcel post were stolen last night from mail lock box outside Cotton Belt Railroad station at Delta; lock hasp was pried off box and mail removed, according to Post Office Inspector Richard R. Collom.

75 years ago: Aug. 8, 1927

James Barham, whose home is at Bloomfield and who will be remembered as basketball player with Teachers College team, has returned from tour of Europe with Detroit, Mich., Y.M.C.A. basketball team; this team won international championship in series between Canadian and American teams and was awarded trip abroad for games with European teams, in all of which Detroit team was victorious.

Oran - More than 200 people attended meeting of Oran division of West Route Association held at opera house last night; meeting was called to discuss location of Highway 61 from near Ancell to pavement at Portageville; many prominent people spoke on advantages of locating highway along western route, which would give this district two good highways instead of one.
