25 years ago: Aug. 7, 1979

Work began yesterday on Missouri Pacific Railroad crossings at Clark and Independence, two of 14 repair projects that are scheduled for completion sometime this fall; after track and ties are replaced, pavement will be resurfaced with asphalt and crossing smoothed out.

Jackson Board of Aldermen has hired Architecture Co. from Cape Girardeau to design police and fire complex to be located on northwest corner of intersection of highways 61, 25, 72 and 34.

50 years ago: Aug. 7, 1954

Cape Girardeau Public Golf Course, being built by Jaycees, is assured plentiful water supply for its grass greens; brand new, 2 1/2-million gallon lake, bone dry last Saturday, is now nearly full of water.

Construction permits issued at office of city engineer tapered off in July in lowest dollar total since January, but at same time pushed amount issued in 1954 to just few thousand short of $2 million figure for year.

75 years ago: Aug. 7, 1929

Sixty home sites in Rodney Vista, new residential territory just outside of western city limits, on Highway 61, will be sold at public auction Aug. 21, it is announced by Bowman Bros. Realty Co.; in connection with sale, number of prizes will be given, including $125 diamond ring for most popular woman.

Excavation has begun on basement of new church building for Christian Science Society; building, for which C.J. Reisenbichler is contractor, is being built on west side of West End Boulevard between Themis and Luce.
