Sizzling 97-degree weather, topped only by the torrid 100 hit July 4, sends Girardeans to the water fountain and ice vendors seeking relief; the continued hot weather and 56 percent average humidity cause tongues to hang; residents in all parts of town can be seen sitting outside, hoping for a passing breeze.

The Cape Girardeau School Board, impatient with delays of its building program, votes to issue a sternly worded note to the two contractors constructing additions at Jefferson and Alma Schrader schools reminding them of their Aug. 15 deadline.

"Arabian Nights," the best known of children's stories, will be presented in a great spectacle in Houck Stadium the week of Sept. 14 by the Rogers Producing Company; the production calls for a cast of 800 people performing on a stage more than 300 feet long at Houck Stadium; the show will be sponsored by The Missourian.

A new Wicks organ has been installed at the Haman Funeral Home, 107 S. Sprigg St.; owner L.L. Haman says it is the only pipe organ in a funeral home between St. Louis and Memphis, Tenn.

1912

By the action of the Cape Girardeau City Council last night, it was decided there will be no municipal ownership of the water and light business here at present; the ordinance authorizing a special election for the issuing of $225,000 bonds for the inauguration of a municipal water and light plant failed to pass.

Gross & Ruh have bought the butcher shop of George Buell on Good Hope Street, known as the Good Hope Meat Market.
