POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- More than 8,000 marijuana plants with a street value estimated at $8 million were seized yesterday in the Mark Twain National Forest north of Poplar Bluff; the seizure didn't result in any arrests, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Saying screen writers believe "it's time to go back to work," former Cape Girardeau resident Jerry McNeely predicts he and other screen writers will ratify a new contract with Hollywood producers Sunday, ending a strike that has paralyzed the industry.

Burglars broke into the Buckner-Ragsdale Co. store, 130 N. Main St., over the weekend and broke open the main safe, taking between $3,500 and $4,000; the burglary and theft are discovered this morning by an employee, Frank Brassfield.

A permit for a new radio station for Cape Girardeau has been approved by the Federal Communications Commission; station KZIM will be operated by the Missouri-Illinois Broadcasting Co.; proprietors of the company are Jerome B. Zimmer and L.D. Speidel.

A drastic reduction in the staff of the Social Security office in Cape Girardeau County is indicated with an announcement by the state headquarters that the force throughout the state would be reduced because of a lack of funds for administrative purposes; 550 employees statewide will be laid off Aug. 15.

Jackson Mayor J.R. Bowman announces that, while the State Board of Health still hasn't given its full approval to the plans for a swimming pool, it has agreed to give permission to begin construction on the pool using WPA labor.

1913

The contract for paving South Hanover Street, from Bloomfield Road to College Street, has been let by the City Council to Harmon Loeffel; the street will be constructed of concrete like all other streets made during the last two years.

More than 100 women of Cape Girardeau meet at the Presbyterian Church in the evening to form a league through which they may exert their influence for the moral betterment of Cape Girardeau; the group will meet again Friday to perfect the organization.
