1987

The Rev. Richard C. Rolwing is installed as pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral at a morning service; he is installed by the Rev. Stephen Schneider, acting as the representative of Bishop John J. Leibrecht; a reception follows in the school cafeteria.

The Rev. Henry "Hank" Murray is guest speaker and musician at an evening service at First Free Will Baptist Church.

1962

Dr. D.R. Seabaugh, widely known urologist and leader of the Newhouse Kidney Foundation, dies at a local hospital; he ended his practice with his brother, Dr. L.R. Seabaugh, on Jan. 7 because of illness.

Bill Brandt and Greg Flaker were chosen "sportsmen of the year" in the Cape Girardeau Boys League this season; Brandt is manager of the Athletics, and Flaker is a player on the Yankees team.

1937

Mopping perspiration from his brow, John Judd, director of the "Arabian Nights" spectacle, declares he has 499 people "all set" for their costumes; a big truck, containing 12 huge trunks with costumes and many rolls of canvas for scenery has arrived; the gymnasium at Central High looks like a Hollywood production room, with costumes and equipment of all kinds covering the place.

A boy unable to swim is pulled out of the lagoon at Fairground Park by another youth and is saved from drowning when a play boat in which a group of boys is playing sinks in six feet of water; Austin Green, 13, dives into the water to rescue Rodney Hitt, 7.

1912

Water Street is keeping up with the steady progress of the city; the three-story building occupied by Hobbs furniture store has been remodeled, following a disastrous fire several months ago; the Dempsey wholesale building is getting a coat of paint; I. Ben Miller is moving his candy manufacturing plant from Spanish Street to Water Street, to occupy the upper part of the building where he has his ice cream factory.

Anna Bahn, Lillian Bahn, Edna Sebastian and Edith Sebastian went over to Jackson yesterday to spend several days with Lenora and Pauline Kierstner, and to take in the Homecomers.
