25 years ago: Aug. 30, 1984

The Cape Girardeau Redevelopment Corp. announces it will purchase the old brick warehouse at 127 Water St. and lease it to David K. McKinney and a Paducah, Ky.-based corporation which plans to open a restaurant and lounge called Jeremiah's.

The figures aren't all in yet, but it appears Southeast Missouri State University may be in line for a record fall enrollment; the university expects 150 to 200 more students this fall than in 1981, when the all-time record of 9,165 was set.

50 years ago: Aug. 30, 1959

Assisting at Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral tomorrow morning will be about 26 seminarians for the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau; Bishop Charles H. Helmsing will officiate and address the students in this second annual back-to-school meeting of the group.

David "Peewee" Erlbacher, 20, Bob Windisch, 18, Dave Dougan, 19, and Tommy Miesner, 19, are pooling their mechanical skills to build a cross-model hot rod; the youths plan to enter supervised races at various towns next summer.

75 years ago: Aug. 30, 1934

The Foreum-James Co. of Dyersburg, Tenn., has submitted the low bid for rebuilding part of the setback levee along the Little River Diversion Channel south of Cape Girardeau; the firm bid $29,500 on the job, which will entail the moving of about 300,000 cubic yards of earth.

Thirty-six of the 48 uniforms for members of the Louis K. Juden Post Drum and Bugle Corps arrive by express, and the balance is due Friday; the flashy togs conform with the corps' name, Golden Troopers.

100 years ago: Aug. 30, 1909

Along with bunting and flags decorating the parade route when President William H. Taft comes to Cape Girardeau, August Schuermann of St. Louis, a consulting decorator, has suggested building an arch at the foot of Themis Street.

Next week, The Republican newspaper will have two artists from St. Louis here to make drawings and interior photographs of several businesses; those wishing to have interior photographs taken of their businesses or homes should contact the newspaper.
