Capping Grand Opening Week at the Show Me Center last night was Bob Hope; the 84-year-old comedian offered some words of "Hope" for President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev: "If city and university officials can work together to obtain a facility like the Show Me Center, then I have hope for Reagan and Gorbachev."

The area between Fruitland and the Procter & Gamble plant is growing; Your Store, a 5,300-square-foot convenience-type store operation is the latest business to emerge on the eight-mile, Highway 177 strip.

1962

Petitions are put in circulation by the Jaycees asking the Cape Girardeau County Court to place a $65,000 bond issue as the local share for construction of a $250,000, 150-acre recreation lake on a special ballot at the November general election; it's been proposed to create the lake on a site near Crump.

State College officials held a registration meeting at Malden, Mo., last night for those who wish to attend the college residence center there during the next semester; the session resulted in 31 enrollees, and school officials plan to hold another registration there next week.

1937

The last of the summer union church services is held in the evening at Grace Methodist Church, with the Rev. C.H. Morton, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, preaching the sermon.

Five dwellings are either ransacked or attempts made to enter them by a burglar or burglars, the cat-walking and screen-breaking thieves escaping from police, even while the burglarizing is still underway; in three instances, the cat burglar is seen by people in the dwellings.

1912

The handsome, five-passenger Regal touring car that the Cape Girardeau Elks will give away for the benefit of their entertainment fund has been taken to Jackson to be put on display during the Homecomers celebration; later, it will be shown at the Cape Girardeau fair.

Benton, Mo., lawyer C.N. Mozley is arranging to send his family to Cape Girardeau, to remain here during the school year; he is making this arrangement in order to keep his sons in the Normal School during the ensuing term.
