Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle files to have 32.5 acres of land at a Whitewater farm seized after about 15 officers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the county sheriff's department conducted a marijuana raid at the location.

For only the second time since it was established 65 years ago, the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department plans to realign some of its districts effective Jan. 1; the plan will give Southeast Missouri's District 10 more counties and more highway miles than any other district.

1962

The city of Cape Girardeau and Central Packing Co. -- more than $20,000 apart on the sale price of land the city needs for its sewage disposal plant -- will have the issue settled in court; city attorney Raymond H. Vogel will file a condemnation suit against the packing company.

Berneice Kish is elected by Scott City Ward II voters to fill the council seat vacated by Mayor Nevan Fisher; she will be the first woman to serve on the council.

BENTON, Mo. -- A total of 1,098 prospective customers for a proposed rural power-light line in Scott, Mississippi and New Madrid counties have been signed up to purchase electricity if the big network is constructed.

Elimination of the hump on Good Hope Street, where the street passes over the Missouri Pacific Railroad track, east of Middle Street, will take place shortly; it is reported the railroad company has let the contract for correcting the problem, which has long hampered traffic; concrete on either side of the underpass has dropped, making a sharp hump for the street surface.

S.P. Siebert's new shoe store on Main Street is set to open for business tomorrow; he will handle the Selz Royal Blue line of shoes, which is known for its splendid qualities; Siebert has been in the shoe business for a number of years at Farmington, Mo., and knows everything about shoes.

Clarence Lorenz, who for the past year has been messenger boy for Western Union, has resigned his position and is now elevator boy at the H.-H. Building; he replaces Alvin Kempe, who resigned to go to school this fall.
