Cape Girardeau law enforcement and fire officials are conducting campaign to boost compliance with city ordinance regarding posting of street addresses on residences; recent survey of 816 city homes by fire personnel showed only 494 had street addresses currently posted on front of home or above garage door.
After being shut down nearly two months by high water, Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority's public dock was back in operation Monday; traffic was reopened on Mississippi River Sunday, and for first time in long while, barge was unloaded at dock yesterday.

Chaffee, Mo. -- Future of proposed facelift for downtown business district will be decided by Chaffee Chamber of Commerce during special meeting Monday; decision will be whether or not to commit two-block section of Yoakum and Main for scrutiny by agency of Washington University at St. Louis; cost for analysis and creation of master plan is estimated at between $6,000 and $7,500 with about $5,000 already pledged to project.
Announcement is expected within 30 days by Cape Girardeau Library Board on completion of its plans for new 21,000-square-foot facility; ground breaking is expected in late October or early November; structure will be built on 5.2-acre site on North Clark.

Figures supplied by various military components in Cape Girardeau indicate that minimum of 1,123 men and women from county have served their country during period of Korean War and are eligible for place on The Missourian's Honor Roll; records are incomplete, but major difficulty in assembling list of names lies in not knowing how many were still in service at time war began June 25, 1950.
Although lights went out in midst of evening visiting period when outside transformer failed, total of 549 people toured new Central High School yesterday on first day of week-long open house; Missouri Utilities Co. workers are engaged today to determine if transformer is of sufficient capacity to carry amount of current building will need.
75 years ago: Aug. 25, 1928
Eighteenth annual women's Missionary Conference of General Baptist Church, including delegates from Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana, opened last night at General Baptist Church and will continue through Sunday; R.S. Douglass of Teachers College made keynote address at opening session.
Reduced round-trip railroad rates on Frisco, at fares less than one-way charge, are announced for bridge dedication and American Legion convention in Cape Girardeau on Sept. 3; reduced rates apply on trips from as far north as St. Louis and as far south as Blytheville, Ark.
