The fountain in front of the KFVS-TV building, 310 Broadway, is being removed; the fountain, which hadn't been in working order since 1984, is being removed because of maintenance issues and vandalism.

1963

Acting under bids received in July, the Missouri State Highway Commission has awarded the Adams Building Maintenance Co., Inc., of Chicago, a contract to paint the Mississippi River bridge here at a cost of $90,637; the work should begin next week.

Frank Nitsch is honored in Jackson for his years of service to baseball in the city; the Jackson Jaycees and Babe Ruth League managers present Nitsch with a portable radio in between games of a doubleheader at Legion Park.

1938

Should the city of Cape Girardeau lose all the lawsuits now pending against it, more than $20,000 would have to be raised to pay off the judgements; the biggest of the cases is that of Val Fischer, a former city street employee, who got an $8,000 judgement against the city for injuries allegedly sustained because of what he claims was a faulty shovel; the case has been appealed.

Robert Wilson, former police officer and for a number of years an attendance officer for the public schools, leases the Casita Grill on Cape Rock Drive; he'll start operating the restaurant next week.

1913

The Rev. W.C. Shupp, the state superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League, speaks at the morning worship service at Centenary Methodist Church.

Baseball fans here, who been knocking the Capahas, saying they can't play ball, are taught a lesson; the Caps trounce the visiting Perryville, Mo., club, 8-0; Lennox pitches sensational ball, allowing the heavy-hitting Blues one lone hit.
