After a weekend of moving and unpacking, many Southeast Missouri State University students are back in the classroom for the first day of classes of the 1987-1988 school year; more than 8,000 students are expected to enroll for classes during the fall semester.

Schnucks Food and Drug manager Dennis Marchi is pleased with the turnout over the weekend at Schnucks Food Fair at the new Show Me Center; more than 60,000 people attended the two-day event, sampling food given away by 86 vendors.

1962

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- A Cape Girardeau player, Mike Busch, enlivened the 17th International Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament Wednesday with a hole-in-one; he shot an 82 total for the first round, which was led by Jim Wiechers of Atherton, Calif., with a 69; Busch, 17, sank the first hole-in-one in tournament history on the 14th hole of the Spring Valley Country Club.

Ignored by rain clouds for three weeks, Cape Girardeau County is stricken with dehydrated crops, pastures and lawns, dry stream beds, low ponds and lots of dust.

1937

Thirteen pirates and six Chinese princes from the Cape Girardeau Jaycees will be included in the cast of 600 people for "Arabian Nights," to be presented Sept. 14 to 16 at Houck Field Stadium; they were chosen at a meeting of the Jaycees last night at Colonial Tavern.

More than a dozen Jackson men have taken out application blanks as prospective applicants for the job of postmaster; among those interested in the job are Charles B. Beattie and Adam H. Hoffman, the former county sheriff.

A skiff coming down river last night intended to land at the Cape Girardeau levee, but couldn't find room because of the number of fishermen who sat along the sea wall with hooks in the water, trying to catch Sunday dinner.

The program at the Grand Theater for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be of great interest to Cape Girardeans; the unusually large program will be headed by singer Edyth Vorbeck, a Cape Girardeau girl who has just returned home from a successful season on the road with the Emery company.
