Southeast Missouri State University students wait in long lines at the University Center to register for fall semester classes, which begin tomorrow.

Local telephone workers will probably be returning to their jobs on Thursday with the rest of the nation's AT&T employees, says a spokesman for Local 6316 of the Communication Workers of America AFL-CIO, which represents about 200 Southeast Missouri telephone workers; a tentative $3 billion contract has been agreed upon by AT&T and its unions.

50 years ago: Aug. 22, 1958

Cape Girardeau city officials say a number of municipal services have been extended into the populated areas of the recently annexed territory and that others will be added as facilities permit and growth continues.

The one-story frame dwelling at 740 S. Fountain St., occupied by the John Brinkley family, is damaged by fire when a kerosene stove explodes; most of the damage is to the kitchen and the back porch.

75 years ago: Aug. 22, 1933

W.C. Bahn of Cape Girardeau has been elected president of the Teachers College Board of Regents; he succeeds Julien N. Friant, who resigned Monday as chairman, but will remain as a member of the board.

In the near future, Cape Girardeau may have new regulations governing Sunday closings; the city council has ordered city counselor Frank A. Lowry to draft an amendment to the present ordinance governing closing of businesses on Sundays; this amendment will make the city law conform with state laws and tend to a more liberal construction of the Sabbath regulations.

100 years ago: Aug. 22, 1908

Capt. F.L. Withaup has sold his City Drug Store to Joe N. Woolsey, who has been a clerk in the store for two years; Withaup will go to St. Louis tonight, where he will become manager of the Garrison Odeon, a moving picture show.

There will be no baseball game tomorrow for the Capahas; most of the clubs in close proximity to Cape Girardeau have gone out of business, and the crowds have been so small lately, the management can't afford to bring a team here from a distance.
