Bishop John J. Leibrecht of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese has announced the transfer of Monsignor Joseph E. Gosche from St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau to St. Michael's Parish in Fredericktown, Mo., effective Aug. 17; he will be succeeded here by the Rev. Richard C. Rolwing, pastor of Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Branson, Mo.
The congregation of First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau recently honored Joe Russell for his continuing contributions to Scouting.
Foundations have been laid and work is underway at Houck Stadium by State College forces on construction of bleachers on the north side of the football field to accommodate several hundred more spectators; the old press box, a temporary frame structure built several years ago, has been removed to make way for the construction.
By the light of the fading evening sun, 162 graduates, including 22 who receive master's degrees, are honored at State College commencement exercises at the campus terraces; commencement speaker is Joseph Welman, president of the Bank of Kennett (Mo.).
Expanded city postal service is put into effect, providing twice-daily mail delivery to the doors of 500 additional families in the Red Star, Marble City Heights, west and southwest sectors of Cape Girardeau.
Both temperature and rainfall were below the 44-year average in Cape Girardeau County during July; the average temperature was 70.54 degrees, while the general average is 77.60 degrees; the hottest days were July 15 and 16, when an even 100 degrees was registered, while the coolest was on the night between the last of June and the first day of July, 51 degrees; rainfall was 2.57 inches, 0.97 of an inch less than average.
The Frisco good roads train of four cars arrives in Cape Girardeau in the evening and will remain here until noon tomorrow; a series of lectures and demonstrations will be made to illustrate the various sorts of roads and working models of road-making machinery.
T.P. Russell of Cape Girardeau is named a member of the Cape Girardeau Normal School Board of Regents by Gov. H.S. Hadley; he succeeds the late Leon J. Albert.
